Kitchen & Kitchen Cabinets Interior Painting Project in Lakes of Preston - Frisco, TX

This kitchen refresh in the Lakes of Preston neighborhood of Frisco, TX replaced outdated stained wood cabinets and wallpaper with clean, modern color tones: Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace on the cabinetry and Polar Sky on the walls. The complete interior painting scope covered 273 square feet of kitchen wall, 114 square feet of stained cabinetry, 25 linear feet of base moulding, two window sills, and two door sides — along with 35 patch-and-retexture repairs required following wallpaper removal.

Project at a Glance

  • Location: Frisco, TX
  • Neighborhood: Lakes of Preston
  • Property Type: Residential Home — Kitchen
  • Project Size: 273 Sq. Ft. of Walls / 114 Sq. Ft. of Cabinetry / 25 Linear Ft. of Base Moulding

The Challenge: Bonded Wallpaper & Stained Cabinets

Converting a kitchen from aged stain and bonded wallpaper to a painted finish requires deliberate surface preparation. Stained wood cannot simply be painted over without proper bonding coats, and removing old wallpaper almost always damages the underlying sheetrock.

Additionally, functional kitchens bring daily logistics to consider: the workspace needs to be temporarily taken out of service, containment must control odors and paint overspray, and freshly painted cabinets require sufficient cure time before cookware and dishes can safely go back on shelves.

The Discovery: Extensive Wall Repairs Required

Once the wallpaper came off, 35 individual repair zones were identified, each up to two feet square. Properly blending these patched sections into the existing wall required skiff-coating, texturing, and detailed sanding across sections up to four feet long. Because texture is applied by hand, the objective was blending the finish seamlessly into the existing drywall pattern prior to painting.

The Solution: Custom Color Matching & On-Site Containment

After completing wall repairs, up to two coats of Sherwin-Williams® Emerald® Interior (Satin) tinted to Benjamin Moore® Polar Sky CC-790 were applied to the walls. The cabinetry, base moulding, window sills, and door sides were finished with Sherwin-Williams® Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel (Semi-Gloss) tinted to Benjamin Moore® Chantilly Lace OC-65. Custom color matching allowed the client to use their preferred color palette in high-durability coatings suited for kitchen wear.

To execute the cabinet conversion cleanly, a temporary 300-square-foot spray booth was constructed on-site to protect the rest of the home. Cabinet hinges and box interiors were carefully masked off so only the outer faces and drawer fronts were converted from stain to paint.

The Results: Fresh, Cohesive Finishes

The finished kitchen seamlessly pairs the crisp semi-gloss Chantilly Lace trim and cabinets with the soft satin Polar Sky walls. By matching the cabinet color directly to the trim, doors, and window sills, the entire room feels larger and brighter.

The Process

How our team managed every stage of this kitchen transformation.

Step 1

Inspect & Document

Took accurate surface measurements across walls, trim, and cabinetry while mapping out 35 distinct wallpaper damage areas needing retexturing.

Step 2

Consult & Confirm

Finalized color choices (Chantilly Lace and Polar Sky) and confirmed technical preferences: masking cabinet interiors and preserving hinge hardware.

Step 3

Prepare & Protect

Laid down heavy builder paper and plastic film from the home entry through the kitchen, removed wall hardware, and assembled a sealed 300 sq. ft. spray booth.

Step 4

Repair & Paint

Stripped wallpaper, patched and retextured damaged drywall, then applied Emerald® Interior Satin to walls and Emerald® Urethane Enamel to cabinets and trim.

Step 5

Clean Up

Removed masking, protective paper, and spray booth containment, sweeping and re-installing light covers and window treatments.

Step 6

Final Inspection

Walked through the completed space with the homeowner to review finish quality, explain curing care, and finalize warranty coverage.

Why Proper Preparation Matters

A coat of paint is only as good as the foundation beneath it. Drywall stripped of wallpaper requires thorough surface cleanup, patching, sanding, and retexturing before primers or paint can adhere cleanly. Filling nail holes and applying flexible acrylic sealant (PowerHouse White) along trim joints prevents air gaps and creates crisp transition lines.

Protecting the surrounding home during this phase is equally essential. Covering floors with thick builder paper, sealing off adjoining living space with heavy-density plastic, and constructing an enclosed spray chamber ensures sanding dust and overspray stay confined within the work zone.

Selecting Materials for Daily Kitchen Wear

Cabinet doors and baseboards take high traffic and frequent handling. These surfaces were finished using Sherwin-Williams® Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel. This coating cures to a smooth, durable finish that resists grease and wipes clean easily. For walls—which experience far less contact—Emerald® Interior Satin provides an easy-to-clean sheen without creating harsh light reflections.

Warranty & Workmanship

This project is backed by a 3-year workmanship warranty covering application quality, alongside a 1-year coverage period on surface drywall repairs. (Note that natural home settling and seasonal foundation shifts over time can cause stress lines in drywall, which is normal maintenance for Texas homes.)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How long should freshly painted kitchen cabinets cure before loading dishes back inside?

A: Even when paint feels dry to the touch, acrylic and urethane coatings require several days to fully cure and release residual odors. We recommend waiting several days before restocking cabinets and shelves. If shelves must be used sooner, lining them with wax paper after a minimum of two days helps protect the finish. If you plan to install new hardware or hinges, wait at least 30 days for the enamel to reach full hardness.

Q: Can retextured drywall perfectly match original walls after wallpaper is removed?

A: Hand-applied drywall texture will closely match existing walls, but subtle variations are natural. When wallpaper is removed, underlying paper layers and drywall mud pull away at different depths. Technicians skim-coat and hand-texture repaired zones to blend with the original finish as seamlessly as possible prior to priming and painting.

Q: Does painting kitchen cabinets include painting interior boxes and hinges?

A: Standard cabinet refinishing focuses on exterior doors, drawer fronts, and visible face frames. Cabinet box interiors and hinge hardware are masked off to preserve their original function and clean appearance unless full interior painting is specifically requested.
