A windstorm passed through Vista of Eldorado and damaged shingles across this home’s roof, which was already 13 years old and nearing the end of its expected service life. The homeowner’s handyman put temporary tarps over the worst-hit areas while the homeowner worked with their insurance company to get a replacement approved.

With a roof already at that age, wind damage on top of normal wear made a full replacement the more sensible path forward rather than patching isolated areas. The homeowner’s insurance carrier approved the project, and the goal was a roofing system built to hold up against the same kind of wind events that had already gotten the better of the old shingles.

Once tear-off began, the crew found that the home’s roof planes ranged from 7/12 to 9/12 pitch. Slopes that steep increase wind uplift on aging shingles and require more careful footing and handling during both removal and installation.

The original ventilation setup relied on a mix of turbine and box vents that wasn’t pulling enough hot air out of the attic for a home this size. The team also found that flashing around the valleys and roof edges had degraded enough that it needed full replacement rather than reuse.

The Solution: A Full System Replacement, From Decking to Ridge

The team removed the old roofing system and installed TRI® Charcoal Bronze Style A aluminum drip edge along the perimeter to direct water into the gutters. Over the bare decking, we applied Owens Corning® ProArmor® synthetic underlayment, which resists tearing better than traditional felt paper, and lined the valleys with Owens Corning® WeatherLock® Mat self-sealing waterproofing barrier to keep water from migrating sideways under the shingles.

The main roofing layer is Owens Corning® TruDefinition® Oakridge® architectural shingles in Estate Gray, secured with coil roofing nails. To address the ventilation issue found during discovery, we replaced the mixed turbine/box vent setup with five Air Vent 12-inch externally braced aluminum turbine vents. Plumbing stacks were resealed with new galvanized flashing and lead pipe jacks, coated in Rust-Oleum® protective spray paint to match the shingle color.

The Results: A Wind-Resistant Roof With Better Airflow

The home now has a dimensional architectural shingle profile that gives it a more modern look than the flat 3-tab shingles it replaced. The upgraded turbine ventilation gives the attic continuous airflow, which should help ease the load on the home’s air conditioning during North Texas summers.

With new underlayment, valley barrier, and flashing throughout, the roof is set up to shed wind-driven rain without the vulnerabilities that led to this replacement in the first place.
