The Challenge: Familiar Wear on a Home Phillips Painted Once Before

Phillips painted this home’s exterior back in 2010, so when peeling paint and weathered trim started showing up again on the right and back elevations, the homeowner knew who to call. What looked at first like cosmetic wear turned out to run deeper — exposed wood was already absorbing moisture, and the gutter system had stopped managing runoff the way it needed to.

Left alone, that combination creates exactly the kind of problem a repaint alone can’t fix: water finding its way behind siding and pooling near the foundation instead of draining away from it.

The Discovery: Rot Behind the Paint and Gaps in the Gutters

Once the crew got past the failing paint layer, the right and back elevations showed trim and siding sections that had fully succumbed to moisture damage. The garage door frames were in worse shape near the ground, where lawn irrigation and standing water had accelerated the rot.

The gutters told a similar story — the seams had lost their seal, and there was nothing in place to stop leaves and debris from building up and blocking the channels.

The Solution: Fiber-Cement Repair, a Full Repaint, and Reinforced Gutters

We replaced the damaged sections with James Hardie® HardieTrim® fiber-cement trim and HardiePlank® Select Cedarmill siding, which won’t absorb moisture or rot the way the original wood did. For the garage entryway, new Southern Yellow Pine jambs were installed with PVC composite stops, with the bottom twelve inches factory-primed on all sides to block ground-level moisture.

Every seam, joint, and window transition across the brick and siding was sealed with Sherwin-Williams® Powerhouse® 1050QD siliconized acrylic latex caulk before the home was repainted in Sherwin-Williams® Emerald® Exterior Acrylic Latex Satin in Alabaster (SW7008). On the gutter side, the existing runs were cleaned and resealed with Geocel® aluminum gutter sealer, then fitted with 250 linear feet of Armour Lock® 5″ powder-coated steel fine-mesh guards to keep debris out going forward. The front door and shutters were finished in Sherwin-Williams® Emerald® Urethane Trim Enamel in Black Bean (SW6006), providing a sharp contrast against the Alabaster exterior.

The Results: A Repeat Job Backed by Real Repairs, Not Just a Fresh Coat

The home’s trim and siding are now built from material that won’t repeat the rot cycle that brought the homeowner back to Phillips in the first place. The new Alabaster finish restores the crisp look from the original 2010 paint job, now backed by fiber-cement components underneath instead of the original wood.

With the gutters resealed and guarded against clogging, water is routed away from the foundation instead of overflowing onto the fascia — addressing the second half of the problem that brought this homeowner back.

Given that this home had already gone through one full moisture-damage cycle since its last paint job, the material choices here were about breaking that cycle rather than just refreshing the surface. James Hardie® fiber-cement trim and siding won’t absorb moisture or attract insects the way the original wood did. The Southern Yellow Pine door jambs were factory-primed on their lower twelve inches specifically to resist the ground-level moisture that damaged the originals.
